Have you already heard about Dr. Emoto’s rice experiment? I first became aware of it about 10 years ago and the discovery of what it presented really blew my mind.
Essentially, if what Dr. Emoto discovered is true, it means that not only do our thoughts and feelings have a major impact on ourselves but they can also be transmitted into our physical world – in essence, there is enormous power in intention.
Dr. Masaru Emoto’s water experiments
Dr. Emoto, was a Japanese scientist who promoted the idea that our thoughts and intentions impact the physical realm.
For over 20 years he studied how the molecular structure in water transforms when it is exposed to human words, thoughts, sounds and intentions.
His work was documented in the New York Times Bestseller, The Hidden Messages in Water.
In his book, Dr. Emoto demonstrated how water exposed to loving, benevolent, and compassionate human intention resulted in aesthetically pleasing physical molecular formations in the water.
Water that was exposed to fearful and discordant human intentions resulted in disconnected, disfigured, and “unpleasant” physical molecular formations.
He carried out his experiments using Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology and high speed photography.
Dr. Emoto’s work has been discredited by some others as pseudo-science and personally, I find that really disappointing.
Having an open and inquisitive mind is one of the greatest gifts we can have. Assuming that we know everything there is to know about the mysteries of life, is a very dangerous and stifling place to dwell.
Check out the video below to learn more about Dr. Emoto’s experiments and to see some of the beautiful images he captured.
How to do Dr. Emoto’s Rice Experiment
Dr. Emoto encouraged others to explore his findings and created the rice experiment for school children.
Scientific studies have indicated that cooked rice has a variable water content of approximately 65.8%.
So, considering that that human body also has a similar water content percentage (see further below for more information on this), cooked rice is a good material to work with.
To demonstrate the impact our thoughts, words and intentions can have on water he took three parts of plain cooked rice and three sterile jars with lids.
He placed an equal quantity of rice in each of the jars and sealed them. On one jar he placed the word ‘love’, on another jar the word ‘hate’, and on the third jar the word ‘ignore’.
He instructed the children to say positive things to the jar with the word ‘love’. To the jar with the word ‘hate’ they were to say horrible things. And to the jar with the word ‘ignore’ they were to ignore it (it was operating as the control part of the experiment).
After a period of a few weeks, the results spoke for themselves:
The rice in the ‘love’ jar stayed pretty much untouched.
The rice in the ‘hate’ jar had turned a nasty black color.
And the rice in the ‘ignore’ jar had gathered an appropriate amount of mold as it had begun to decompose.
If you want to see how this experiment works, there are plenty of examples of bloggers on YouTube that have done it. Here’s one:
You could also try this experiment successfully with plants, but it’s kinder to do it with rice! Next time, you pass a tree or plant, whisper a little something loving its way!
Why does Dr. Emoto’s Rice Experiment work?
One blogger who carried out the rice experiment made an interesting discovery through vacuum-sealing some of his jars.
The non-vacuum-sealed jars worked as Dr. Emoto and others who have also carried out the experiment described.
The vacuum-sealed jars however, stayed unaffected. The blogger concluded that in order for negative or positive vibes/thoughts/intentions to be transmitted, air is required.
This is an interesting finding, and one in which I will ponder.
My initial thoughts were that water is the key to everything in this equation. There are various levels of water in the air we breathe and maybe this is what is required to transmit the intentions, and why the vacuum-seal interferes.

Why is this information useful from a health perspective?
Most of us are aware that our bodies consist of a high level of water. In fact, the 37 trillion cells that make up our body are mostly comprised of water.
Lung cells are 83% water.
Kidney cells are 79% water.
Brain and heart cells are 75% water.
Children actually have the most body water – babies at around 75% and older children at 65% – compared to adults; with adult males sitting at 60% and adult females with 55%.
There are things which can destroy water structure and therefore impair cellular function.
So pairing that knowledge with the information that Dr. Emoto’s research provides, it becomes quite an interesting proposal to consider how our physical bodies might react to words, thoughts and intentions.
If our thoughts and words – or those of others around us – are negative and fear-based, the water in our bodies records this energy and it will have a serious impact on our health.
If you find it hard to believe that the water content in our bodies could play such a large role, consider for a minute the impact the moon has on water; not only does it control the tides, it also seems to have a major impact on humans and their behavior.
I also find it interesting that babies and young children have a higher body water percentage than adults.
As parents or caregivers of young people, I think it’s important to bear this in mind and remember that their bodies, through the water within them, are constantly recording their experiences – good and bad – and these will be replayed for them later on in life.
We have the amazing opportunity to help them to live future healthy adult lives – mind, body and soul – simply by being aware of how our bodies work to store emotion.
And if we as adults, find ourselves experiencing health problems related to childhood trauma, working to reprogram the water within ourselves with positivity and love, can help us to experience a new reality of health and freedom.
What can we do with this information?
Dr. Emoto demonstrated that water crystals are damaged by certain types of music, sounds, spoken negative words and thoughts.
Alternatively, beautiful music, kind and loving spoken words and affectionate thoughts can positively impact the structure of water.
Knowing this, we should be aware of our surroundings and the thought program we have running on autopilot in our minds if we want to experience good health.
Listen to natural sounds or classical music. Speak positive and affirming words to yourself and others. Do as much as you can to create beautiful water crystal structures and not negative ones!
Exploring as a Family
I know a lot of people have tried doing Dr. Emoto’s Rice Experiment with kids to show the power of words. I think this is a wonderful project that can be done together as a family to help everyone be mindful of their interactions with each other and promote loving kindness.
Prayer and Blessings
In addition, in knowing how water operates in transmitting thoughts and intentions, it goes to show how important praying over or blessing food or drink can be.
If you’re sick or struggling with a chronic illness, taking the time to bless your food and send intentions of health and healing could be really beneficial. I imagine that the higher the vibration and water content of the food, the easier it is to imbue it with healing thoughts (i.e. raw fruit and vegetables).
And praying and blessing your friends and family will also help with healing too.
Another action that I’m inspired to take is send healing thoughts and words towards bodies of water such as streams, rivers, lakes and oceans to help purify the water and spread healing and positivity widely.
Intention Setting & Affirmations
Also, perhaps when setting intentions we could focus them towards any clouds in the sky. When it rains they’ll shower good thoughts down on people and the land. We’d never consider a rainy day to be a bad day again!
And finally, when doing our daily positive affirmations, intuitively, I’m guided to project these towards the water in my body. I’ve always found affirmations really hard to believe in when I’m in a low place, and this is when we really need them the most.
Directing affirmations to the water in my body, helps to bypass a negative conscious mindset and allows the subconscious functions of my body take over. Does this make sense to you, too?
What about you?
Do you have any ideas of how Dr. Emoto’s work can be considered for everyday life? Will you be carrying out Dr. Emoto’s Rice Experiment at home?
